Carol E. Macpherson Memorial Scholarship & Alumnae Society Scholarship - FAQ

What is the difference between Macpherson and Alumnae Society Scholarships?
The Carol E. Macpherson Memorial Scholarship and the Alumnae Society Scholarship are awarded jointly, use the same application, and have the same qualifications. The Macpherson Scholarship is a private scholarship administered through the Undergraduate WomenÕs Program in the Office for University Women. The Alumnae Society Scholarship is a University of Minnesota Foundation scholarship.

What is considered a five-year gap?
Applicants must have a gap totaling five consecutive years in their education. This gap may be prior to entering college or during a college career (e.g., a five year break between high school and college or a college career interrupted with a break of five years).

May I apply if I am entering or enrolled in a graduate program?
Yes. However, priority is given to those who have not had the opportunity to pursue a higher education degree. It is rare that someone in a doctoral program would receive an award.

Do I have to be a full-time student in order to apply?
No, but you must be at least a half-time student. Half-time status is 6 credits per semester for undergraduate programs and 3 credits per semester for the Graduate School. Half-time enrollment for Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine, Dentistry, & Law School is 6 credits; Public Health is 4 credits.
