Willey Hall 125
7:00 p.m.
RSVP: women@umn.edu or 612-625-9837 (Please announce to classes and colleagues!)
Reception and book signing following lecture.

There's a lot of stereotypes about feminists: they hate men, they're lesbians, they run for president of the United States. But what is feminism really about? Can it have anything to do with your own life? Come listen to a discussion and reading by writer and editor Daisy Hernández on her own experiences with feminism, on how gender and race have shaped her identity as a feminist and what it means to connect feminism to the communities we call home.

__________________

Fierce, fresh and smart, Daisy Hernández focuses on race, gender, sexuality, and other issues affecting young women of color. A queer Cubana-Colombiana Americana, she is a personal essayist and co-editor of Colonize This! Young Women of Color on Today’s Feminism (Seal Press). She is the managing editor of ColorLines, the national newsmagazine on race and politics, and has written for a range of publications including the National Catholic Reporter and Bitch magazine. She’s reported for the metro desk at the New York Times and written on feminism and Latina life for Ms. magazine.

Her personal essays focus on familia, feminism, sexuality, alcoholism, cultural identity and why we fall in love. Daisy began writing essays and winning awards in elementary school and continued from there into book publishing and then into journalism. She believes passionately in the transformative nature of stories. Whether it’s a personal tale about surviving ESL or a political commentary on war refugees, she thinks stories deepen our understanding of ourselves and in that way connects us across divides with other people.

A graduate of William Paterson University and New York University, Daisy grew up in a working-class neighborhood in Fairview, New Jersey. She has published essays in several publications including Without a Net (Seal Press) and Border-line Personalities (HarperCollins Rayo).

Gender and Pay Equity Panel

Can you believe that in 2007, women earn less money than men in the same position? Just one year out of college, women working full-time earn 80% of what their male colleagues make, even in the same field (AAUW, 2007)! Ten years after college graduation, women earn 69 percent of what men earn. The salaries for “traditional” women’s jobs are lower than “traditional” men’s jobs even when more skills and responsibility are required. What is up with this still happening in 2007?! What can we do?

Join us for a panel presentation and discussion on gender and pay equity, with Bonnie Watkins, Executive Director, MN Women’s Consortium and Patty Tanji, President, Pay Equity Coalition. Co-sponsored by the Civil Service and Bargaining Unit Women’s Program Planning Committee. FREE and open to the public.

Wednesday, November 7, 2007, 12 Noon – 1 pm
Rapson Hall 31
