Tish Norman, "Women in Charge! Communication Strategies for Confident Women"
Tish Norman is the founder of Transforming Leaders Now, an educational leadership and transformation consulting company. A member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Phi Delta Kappa Honor Society, and The Links, Inc., this African American former educator is a veteran of the Monster Diversity Leadership Program, where she served as workshop presenter and program emcee for four years. Over one-half million high school and college students have been positively influenced by Tish Norman’s words. In “Women in Charge! Communication Strategies for Confident Women,” Tish reaches out to women on a meaningful, personal level. Tish gives women confident and powerful communication tips that will help them increase their personal effectiveness on campus, in the workplace, and in their personal relationships. Infusing her lecture with humor, Tish highlights strategies for women to improve themselves through time management, their associations and the careful choosing of their role models. Reception follows the lecture.

The Autumn Seminar is dedicated to providing up-to-date information related to advancements in the care and treatment of patients in the areas of maternal fetal medicine, gynecologic oncology, psychiatry, breast health, reproductive endocrinology and other timely topics. This seminar would be ideal for specialists in obstetrics and gynecology, family physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, midwives and other health professionals involved in the field of women's health. "Wandering Planets, Falling Apples, Curving Spaces, Whirling Stars: How Unraveling the Mysteries of Gravity has Taught Us About the Universe"
The William I. Fine Theoretical Physics Institute is proud to host the Annual Misel Family Lecture Series. The Fourth Annual Misel lecture features Helen Quinn, Professor of Physics, Stanford University, who will present "Wandering Planets, Falling Apples, Curving Spaces, Whirling Stars: How Unraveling the Mysteries of Gravity has Taught Us About the Universe." Using the history of understandings about gravity as a template Dr. Quinn talks about how science works and show how our understanding is driven forward by the interweaving of threads that arise in observations and in theory building. Dr. Quinn stresses the importance of seeking consistent interpretations of apparently inconsistent ideas or observations as a key to progress in science.

How To Be Outrageous: A Workshop for Leaders and Aspiring Leaders
You already are outrageous (outrageous= exceeding the bounds of the expected, unconventional, violating accepted standards), and we love you for it! So, in this workshop we will actively think about how we are outrageous, gain some ideas for increasing our confidence and those of others, and commit to taking some action for continued positive change and outrageousness in our lives. Women's Student Activist Collective
Sex Ed for Everyone: Consent
The Women's Student Activist Collective (WSAC) has made a comprehensive sex education video for young students (middle and high school) who have been presented with abstinence only education in their local schools. After screening the film, a discussion will be facilitated by WSAC to discuss the importance of comprehensive education in schools. Refreshments provided. Sex Ed For Everyone: Consent is a follow-up to last year's Sex Ed for Everyone: Don't Worry, It's Supposed to Look Like That. This year, WSAC's home-made film explores birth control and other contraceptives.

No! Confronting Sexual Assault in our Community
This film is about the impact of sexual violence on Black women and girls. As the incidents of violence and sexual assault continue on campuses and in communities across the country, this film can be used to support both women and men, regardless of race, as they learn to navigate the challenging terrain of sexuality without violence. Created by an award-winning producer to shed light on the challenges and solutions to sexual assault in the African American community. NO! Artfully combines socio-historical inquiry with messages from violence prevention advocates and first person testimonial from survivors. This film is the one tool you need to help students of all colors understands the complex dynamics of sexual assault. There will be a discussion after the film. This film showing is sponsored by Black Motivated Women, in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

This fall, the Women’s Center, in collaboration with the 20+ offices and organizations that comprise the University Women’s Consortium, will host its second annual series of events entitled “Discover Exceptional Women.” The series is designed to engage women students, faculty, staff, students, and members of the community in the wide range of resources, programming, and services available to women at the U.
“Discover Exceptional Women” will run from October 5-9, 2009, and will feature welcoming receptions, as well as lectures, films, performances, and workshops on topics including women’s leadership, domestic violence, women’s mental and physical health, and strategies for student involvement and success.
African American educator and lecturer Tish Norman will kick off the week-long series on Monday, October 5 with a lecture entitled, “Women in Charge! Communication Strategies for Confident Women,” which offers women confident and powerful communication tips that will help them increase their personal effectiveness on campus, in the workplace, and in their personal relationships.
Most “Discover Exceptional Women” events are free and open to the public. For more information about the series or any individual event, visit www.umn.edu/women.
