Check to make sure that a wireless card is installed.
Some cards come with diagnostic utilities, which can be useful in detecting signal strength and the like. If your card includes some sort of client manager, you can use that to help determine if the wireless card is functioning.
This program would likely reside in the "Programs" portion of your start menu.
Each card manufacturer does things a bit differently, so the settings of your card may not look the same as the ones discussed in this guide.
This guide takes you through the setup of the Orinoco card, and points out the items that are specific to the University network settings. Your card may have a configuration utility that makes the setup process simple. You may have to place the settings in the properties of your wireless network card under the network control panel. Your card manufacturer can help you determine if this is necessary.
Select the "Start" menu, and then select "Programs."
Tap the "Orinoco PC Card Client" icon to launch the client.
If you have not set up a profile, the wizard for configuring your card automatically launches. If you have a default profile set up, tap on the "Edit Wireless Profiles" link at the bottom of the screen. You can edit the "Default" profile or create a new one.
Select the type of network available.
Select "Access Point" when using the Orinoco card. Other cards might refer to this as "Infrastructure" mode.
Tap the "Next >" button on the bottom of the screen.
Enter "ANY" in the "Network Name" or "SSID" field. It is case sensitive in most instances.
This is the standard way to indicate that your card is to select any access point it finds. However, some cards require that you leave this field blank. Check with your documentation to determine what the requirements for your card are.
The Orinoco Client also allows you to "Scan" for wireless access points. Thus, you can specify which APs you can connect to.
Tap the "Next >" button on the bottom of the screen.
"Wire Equivalent Privacy" (or WEP) might be offered on some wireless networks. The University infrastructure does not implement WEP, so leave it disabled.
Tap the "Next>" button on the bottom of the screen.
Wireless cards drain batteries very quickly, so you may wish to enable advanced power management.
Tap the "Finish" button on the bottom of the screen.
