Set up your computer for WPA2 (Windows Vista)


Select a network

  1. Click the "Start" menu, and select the "Control Panel."

  2. Click "Network and Internet."

  3. Under "Network and Sharing Center," click "Connect to a network."

  4. Right-click "UofM Secure," and select "Properties."

    The "UofM Secure Wireless Network properties" window displays.

Enter network settings

  1. Select "WPA2-Enterprise" from the "Security type" drop-down menu.

  2. Select "AES" from the "Encryption type" drop-down menu.

  3. Select "Protected EAP (PEAP)" from the "Choose a network authentication method" drop-down menu.

  4. Uncheck the box that says "Cache user information for subsequent connections to this network."

  5. Click the "Settings" button.

    The "Protected EAP Properties" window displays.


  6. Ensure that the "Validate server certificate" box is checked.

  7. Locate "Thawte Premium Server CA" under "Trusted Root Certification Authorities" and check the box next to it.  

  8. Be sure that the "Select Authentication Method" drop-down menu is set to "Secure Password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)."

  9. Click the "Configure" button.

  10. Uncheck the box that says "Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any)."

  11. Click the "OK" button.

  12. Click "OK" in the "Protected EAP Properties" window.

  13. Click "OK" in the "UofM Secure wireless network properties" window.

    The "Connect to a Network" window displays.


Log in

  1. Select "UofM Secure" and click the "Connect" button.

  2. A screen requesting additional log on informatin displays.

    Click "Enter/select additional log on information."


  3. In the "Enter Credentials" window, enter your U of M Internet ID (X500) and password. Leave the "Domain" field blank.

  4. When asked to validate the server certificate, click "OK."

  5. If the "Set network location" window displays, select "public location."

    Click "Continue" when prompted.


  6. Click "Close" on the "Successfully set network locations" window.
