ADCS offers departments, organizations and other official U of MN units a production-quality World Wide Web service called "Web Hotel". Web Hotel members are allocated 20 megabytes of space to store Web files on the U of MN central Web server; files may be transferred using AppleShare or FTP. All files on the central Web server are backed up daily. Web sites on Web Hotel may be listed on the U of MN home page as official organizations. As an additional benefit, each Web Hotel member is granted an organizational e-mail account on the U of MN central e-mail system.
Limitations
For security reasons, Web Hotel Service does not support MS Front Page extensions
Descriptive URLs
URLs for Web resources in the Web Hotel are based on the e-mail account username chosen by your organization; the URLs are of the form http://www.umn.edu/username. You are advised to pick a descriptive username so that your site will have an appropriate URL. For example, Academic & Distributed Computing Services (ADCS) picked the username "adcs", and now advertises its Web site as:
http://www.umn.edu/adcs
Security
Only those who know your organization's e-mail account username and password will be authorized to change the contents of your Web site. Also, since the U of MN central Web server runs on the Netscape Commerce Server from Netscape Communications, Web Hotel members can perform secure network transactions. This is recommended for receiving sensitive or confidential data via WWW fill-out forms.
Cost and Signing Up
Web Hotel costs $20/month with a $100 setup fee
