Marigold

MarigoldMarigold is easy to grow. It likes the hot summer sun and keeps most bugs away. It is a native of Argentina and Northern Mexico.

Planting
The plants are easy to grow from seed and are also available in six-packs from every garden center. Put them in a sunny spot, about 8" apart, and they will grow from 12 to 18 inches and bloom until Jack Frost ends their fun.

Tips
People plant marigolds around more vulnerable flowers in order to act as a natural repellent. One sniff of its pungent leaves and most insects head for the next county. Marigolds can bloom all summer especially if you remove the dead blossoms before they go to seed. French marigolds (Tagetes spp.) are known to excrete a substance that kills soil nematodes (small, microscopic worms) and discourage whitefly.
