Bleeding-Heart

bleeding-heartBleeding-Heart has heart-shaped pink blossoms and is a favorite grown in gardens for centuries. It is native to Japan. It is long-lived and vigorous. It goes dormant in the summer and self-sews. Dicentra x 'Luxuriant' is a hybrid of East and West Coast natives and is one of the longest blooming of all perennials.

Planting
It likes shade but not the permanent shade on the north side of a building. Increase your soil's drainage and moisture-holding capacity by digging in lots of organic matter. Mulch with leaf to retain moisture. It must be kept well-watered. Don't bury the crowns or they may rot. To make a rich soil, spread an inch of aged manure or compost overteh plant roots and use earthworms to mix it into the soil for you. Likes balanced soil, not either too acidic or too alkaline.

Tips
Foliage dies back in midsummer. Are an excellent companion plant with Hostas, Astilbes, ferns, begonias, columbines, epimediums, fuchsias, hellebores, primroses and other woodland plants. Excellent as cut flowers. Can be used as ground cover.
