Streaming FAQ
- What is streaming video and audio?
- Streaming video and audio are the media content which can be sent in a continuous stream though the Internet and
played as
they arrive at the media player workstation, such as a computer, either laptop or desktop. With streaming video and audio, a
web user does not have to wait to download a large file before seeing the video or hearing the audio. In order to play
streaming content, the user needs a player application software installed on his/her workstation.
- What is Quick Time media?
- A multimedia architecture developed by Apple that is used on the Internet and other digital media applications.
- What is Real media?
- A special streaming video and audio architecture initiated and further developed by RealNetworks, Inc.
- I have a PC computer. How can I access the streaming media?
- First of all, you have to have a media player installed on your computer. Theoretically, you can choose any media
player
application that is popular in the multimedia world, such as Windows Media Player, Real Player or QuickTime Player. VNS
streaming service provides the Real streaming format as our optimized PC multimedia format. In order to play the Real audio
or video, you have to install the Real Player application on your computer. If you do not have the installation software, you
can download them from www.real.com.
- I have a Mac computer. How can I access the streaming media?
- Like the PC user, you have to install a media player application on your Mac computer. VNS choose Quick Time media
format as
the Mac dedicated streaming media format. Therefore, you need to have Quick Time Player installed on your Mac computer. If you
do not have a Quick Time Player installation package, you can download it from www.quicktime.com.
- I am the event coordinator. What do I need to get from your service for our streaming webcast?
- Technically speaking, VNS can provide Quick Time and Real streaming formats for your Mac and PC users to access
your program.
With each format, VNS can provide narrow band (or low speed) streaming audio only for those telephone modem users, and broad
band (or fast speed) streaming video for those Cable, DSL or LAN users. You can request both formats, each with both speeds,
services for your diverse users. You can also choose either Quick Time or Real specifically for your small group of Mac or PC
users. Upon your request, we will create a URL address linking to the streaming media server to provide media content access.
We will email you the URL address and have a test up running in 3 days before the event, in general. You can use the URL we
provide to you to check if the streaming access working properly.
- How do we add the streaming media content to our website?
- Basically, you just need to embed the streaming media link (URL address) in your website. The media player
application can be
opened in a new page or within a current page, based on your web design. Usually, the URL address provided by VNS is a long
specific server address, for instance
http://ajax.software.umn.edu:8080/ramgen/encoder/abcd/abcd.rm. We recommend
you use a
hyperlink to embed the real URL address, for example "click here
to watch the program", in which "here" can be hyperlinked to
the real URL address so that the user will not see a long and technical looking server address. For more details about how to
embed a streaming media link in your web content, you can visit
here for scripting an embedded
Quick Time media
player, or visit here for programming an
embedded Real Media
player in your web content.
- Can we have the event recorded for our audience to watch later through the Internet?
- Yes. We can archive both Quick Time and Real streaming media contents for your future review. After streaming the
event, we
will upload the archived media files to our dedicated media server and create new URL addresses for accessing those files.
- If you can record the live streaming program for our future webcast, what will you provide to us for our webcast?
- As streamcast, we will provide you the new URL addresses linking to the archived files in our dedicated media
server. You need
to create new links in your website to access those archived media contents. Making a hyperlink and embedding the real URL
address is still recommended, as described at above.
