The USLS Board periodically amends the policy and service guidelines of USLS to reflect changing program resources and student needs. Final determination of eligibility for services is made by USLS.
USLS may assist clients in the following areas:
- Tenant rights: Repairs, security deposits, evictions (unlawful detainer), and lease interpretation. Download Tenant Resource Guide* (includes sample letters to a landlord and information on roommate situations).
- Consumer matters: Automobile purchases and repairs, credit problems, contracts, insurance coverage, defective goods and services, student loans, and property loss.
- Collection: Garnishment and levy on known assets of judgment debtor.
- Wills & trusts: Basic wills and trusts; Living wills (health care directive).
- Family law: Dissolution, legal separation, paternity, domestic abuse, custody, visitation, support, and adoption.
- Immigration: Student visas, asylum, and immediate relative petitions.
- Criminal cases: Misdemeanors*, aggravated traffic matters, and expungements
- Miscellaneous matters: Name changes, power of attorney*, and referrals.
Notary public
USLS staff will notarize documents or signatures, free of charge, during office hours for anyone. No appointment is necessary unless there are numerous documents involved.
To have a signature notarized, bring a state-issued identification with a signature (driver's license or passport). DO NOT SIGN THE DOCUMENT until you are in front of the notary.
To get a certified copy of an original document, bring the original document (not a copy) to the office. USLS will photocopy the document and then notarize the copy as true and correct.
Please bring your identification as outlined above.
Referrals
If USLS cannot help with a problem, USLS maintains a listing of other agencies and services in the Twin Cities area and will point a student in the right direction. If a student is eligible but USLS does not work in that area of the law, the student may still come in for an appointment to discuss his or her options.
