Student Association/Assembly Updates - November 2, 2009

Crookston Student Association (CSA)
Currently the Crookston Student Association (CSA) is working on some upcoming events such as the Cultural Showcase and International Market, as a part of International Week (November 16-20). Also Winter Wonderland is an event in which CSA connects itself with the city of Crookston CSA is also working hard with other student organizations as they are taking over a recycling initiative to increase campus recycling in an effort to reduce the campus' carbon footprint. Further brainstorming is taking place as well to continue to pursue ways of achieving carbon neutrality.

Morris Campus Student Association (MCSA)
For the last several weeks on the Morris Campus Student Association (MCSA) has been dealing with complications surrounding the allocation of the student Technology Fee. This fee has been levied on students, by students and is distributed by MCSA to different organizations and disciplines to update campus technologically. A Campus Assembly committee has been working to change the allocation of this fee as to remove some allocation power from students and transfer it to faculty members. MCSA has proposed an alternative proposal to this committee, maintaining full student allocation in this process. MCSA is also working with Sodexo to create an on campus convenience store to supplement student needs after the closing of the city of Morris' only 24 convenience store.

Graduate and Professional Student Assembly (GAPSA)
GASPA has two events coming up on November 6th: the 2nd in our four-part GAPSA Breakfast Club series (Topic for this session: Power). GAPSA is partnering with the Center for Democracy and Citizenship to bring together this breakfast club series for graduate and professional students to discuss and learn how to address important issues (RSVP to gapsapa@umn.edu). GAPSA's Family Bowling Night, happening from 5:30-8:00 pm in both Goldy's Gameroom in Coffman Memorial Union, and the Gopher Spot in the St Paul Student Center. This event is open and free to all graduate and professional students and their spouses/partners/kids! From November 14-17 GAPSA will be representing the U of M at the 23rd annual conference for the National Association for Graduate-Professional Students (NAGPS), which is being held at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. Finally, please mark your calendars for our next Assembly meeting, scheduled for November 18th from 6-8 pm in Coffman's Mississippi room. Our special guest speaker for the meeting will be University president Robert Bruininks, and free food will be provided! We welcome and encourage everyone to attend!

Minnesota Student Association (MSA)
The Minnesota Student Association has been working diligently over the past few weeks on many issues pertaining to the twin cities campus. We have looked at a proposal which would encourage the University to abstain from using coal to power its infrastructure and move to fulfill its green energy commitment to the environment. MSA will also file an amicus briefing with the University in regards to a recent lawsuit implemented to protect the research assets that fund much of the University. MSA representatives have concluded the last round of interviews with tax preparers as part of MSA's campus relations programming. These student volunteers will go through formal tax preparation training and will work with students this spring to help file their state and federal taxes for no cost to the students. The early stages of "Lend a Hand, Hear the Band" financing have begun which will set the stage for what is expected to be the most successful event and volunteering campaign in the program's history. As always, MSA is busily working to serve the twin cities student body.
