STUDENT SENATE CONSULTATIVE COMMITTEE (SSCC) MINUTES

October 1, 1998

[These minutes reflect discussion and debate at a committee of the University of Minnesota Senate or Twin Cities Campus Assembly; none of the comments, conclusions, or actions reported in these minutes represent the views of, nor are they binding on, the Senate or Assembly, the Administration, or the Board of Regents.]

PRESENT: Ryan Falk (chair), Jason Anderson, Jesse Berglund, YeeLeng Hang, Nathan Hunstad, Brandon Lacy, Deanne Nordberg, Martin O'Hely, Kelli Rusch, Gita Uppal.

The meeting started at 12:50.

1. Welcome and Introductions

Ryan Falk welcomed all members to the academic year. The committee then introduced themselves.

2. Approval of the Agenda

The agenda was approved.

3. Approval of Student Senate Docket

The October 15 Student Senate meeting docket was approved.

4. Discuss Student Senate Orientation

Jesse Berglund said that the Orientation is like last year, minus the ITV hook-ups. Hearing no questions, the Orientation agenda was approved.

5. Discuss Committee Business for Current Year

SSCC raised the following agendas items for this academic year:

Any additional topics can be brought to later meetings.

6. Select Students for Sesquicentennial Committee

It was decided that Committee on Committees would find two students to serve.

7. Chair's Report

Ryan Falk said that the Student Orientation is the only thing that SSCC has been working on over the summer and should be as successful as last year.

8. Student Senate Chair's Report

Jesse Berglund addressed the issue of full attendance at Senate meetings. In the past, faculty have criticized the low student turn-out. At the October meeting, the University Senate will be voting on the Constitutional reform to lower student credit requirements. Since it is a student amendment, all students need to be present. He asked that SSCC members call 5-6 senators reminding them of the meeting and their obligation to attend.

9. Other Business

Ryan Falk asked that all SSCC members attend all SCC meetings, since last year, there was poor student attendance. If students want the faculty and administration to take them seriously, we need to attend. Coordinate campus members should also make some noise so that they are not forgotten.

Since the President will be speaking at the Student Senate meeting, he needs topics or questions to address. Please send these items to Becky.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:11.
