APRIL
17, 2008
[These minutes reflect
discussion and debate at a committee of the University of Minnesota Senate; none
of the comments, conclusions, or actions reported in these minutes represent the
views of, nor are they binding on, the Senate the Administration, or the Board
of Regents.]
PRESENT:
Ronald Miller (chair), Jonathan Bringewatt, James Faghmous, Alicia Smith.
ABSENT:
Neal Brown, Jeni Kiewatt, Kris Schwebler.
1.
CHAIR'S REPORT AND UPDATES
Ron Miller said that he has
recently attended a meeting of the Senate Budget Subcommittee and now
understands better how funds are allocated to Senate functions. He proposed a
discussion of Student Senate stipends at the May meeting. Lastly, he asked
everyone to encourage all student senators to attend the May 1 Senate
meetings.
2.
CAMPUS, STUDENTS ASSOCIATION, AND OTHER GOVERNANCE GROUP UPDATES
Jonathan Bringewatt said that
MCSA elections were held yesterday and results should be available soon. Once
these positions are finalized, next year's board will seek applicants for three
positions, including SSCC. The campus has almost completed its Frisbee golf
course, which will be included in the official campus guide. Morris has also
been reviewing the requirements for senior capstone projects and will release a
report soon.
Alicia Smith said that the new
MSA president is Mark Nagel. The Legislative Affairs Committee is working with
the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the University, and state officials to hold
a voting competition against Wisconsin during this year's presidential election.
The goal is that the state with the highest percentage of students who vote
would be awarded a yet-to-be-determined prize.
James Faghmous said that GAPSA's
president has been elected and the executive board will be elected next
Wednesday. He said that he has discussed the Twin Cities Student Senate
Election Procedures with the assembly, and asked anyone with concerns to contact
him; he has not received any. Lastly, GAPSA has formed a Football Game Day
Committee. He serves on the Neighborhood Subcommittee, which is considering
having incoming students, who violate University rules, do their community
service cleaning up around the new stadium.
3.
DISCUSSION OF TWIN CITIES SENATOR ELECTION PROCEDURES
Members discussed the draft
procedures that were circulated to fill Twin Cities student senator vacancies,
agreeing that directly contacting all students is an important step since many
students might be interested in applying, but do not hear about the vacancies.
Members then discussed the composition of the Student Senate Nominating
Committee. The procedures were then approved as amended.
4.
APPROVAL OF MAY 1 STUDENT SENATE AGENDA
The agenda, with the addition of
elections for the Student Senate Nominating Committee, was approved as
amended.
5.
Other Business
With no further business, Ronald
Miller thanked all members for attending and adjourned the meeting.
