COMMITTEE (SSCC) MINUTES
OCTOBER 9, 2003

Brunsberg, Joshua Colburn, James Kanten, Levi Kary, Charles Stech, Jeremy Steil,

1. VICE PRESIDENT FOR RESEARCH
SEARCH COMMITTEE
Scott LeBlanc noted that SSCC had been requested to
forward a name of a student to serve on the Vice President for Research Search
Committee. No names had been forwarded prior to the meeting. Jeremy Steil and
Derek Brunsberg agreed to forward names to Scott LeBlanc after the meeting, and
then he would send an email to the committee with their choices.
2.
PROPOSED CHANGES TO THE SENATE CONSTITUTION
Scott LeBlanc said that
SSCC would review the Senate Constitution article by article, noting any areas
or concern or that needed more clarification.
Article I
- Why will this section require both a Faculty Senate and University Senate
vote?
- Educational matters need to go to the University

Article II
There were no comments on this
article.
Article III
- How is administrative being defined in Section 1a?
- 50 student senator seats is too low, especially when CLA does not lose a
seat
- Students should have at least 7 voting seats on SCC
- Would all 10 SSCC members vote at the University Senate?
- Why does the president vote?
- Faculty Senate has a 1:30 ratio, whereas the faculty ratio in classrooms in
1:40
- Student and faculty seats should be brought closer together, either by
adjusting the ratio to 100:50:25:25 or 125:60:20:20
- No other group can out-vote the faculty
- All SSCC members should be on SCC, even in an ex officio capacity
- 7th SCC seat to be allocated to second member from MSA or Student
Senate Vice Chair
- University Senate vice chair, how and who nominates and
elects?
Article IV
- Faculty should not have complete control over educational and research
matters
- Section 2b, how can the body ‘represent the University as a
whole’?
Article V
- Should Student Senate have a legislative role regarding student behavior,
student academic integrity, and education?
- Students should be able to offer advice on research matters
- Legislative role is not a function of the Student Senate
- Student Senate should have responsibility for student welfare
- Should Student Senate be charged with recognizing student governments?
- Student Senate should have defined powers and
duties
Article IX
- This article should be approved by the University Senate, not the Faculty
Senate
In closing, members noted concern regarding some of the
issues expressed and the cost in terms of relationships with faculty that might
be seen if some issues are pursued.
3. SSCC CHARGE
With no
time remaining, Scott LeBlanc said that this item would be discussed at a future
SSCC meeting.
With no further business, Scott LeBlanc thanked all members
for attending and adjourned the meeting.
