1. SESQUICENTENNIAL EVENT

June Nobbe discussed the upcoming sesquicentennial events to celebrate the University's 150 years. The first event is Opera on the Farm which will be held on several different farms across the state this summer. The sesquicentennial theme will then be incorporated into other events throughout the year such as convocation, homecoming, and the alumni dinner.

She then stressed the need for student involvement in activities, including increased outreach from the coordinate campuses. To help students with events, grant money is available to help defray costs for events scheduled between October 2000 and September 2001. The deadline for application for grants has been extended to October 17, 2000. Information on how to apply is available at the sesquicentennial homepage: www1.umn.edu/sesqui.

Q: Is there a Morris representative to the planning committee?

A: I am not sure. Crookston and Duluth both have representatives, and Duluth has many events being planned in conjunction with the sesquicentennial.

2. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES

The April 6, 2000 minutes were approved.

3. REPORTS

CHAIR
Jason Reed reported that the academic integrity report and grade change both were approved at the April Senate meeting.

STUDENT SENATE CHAIR
Jason Reed announced that Percy Chaby has been elected the 2000-01 Student Senate Chair.

DULUTH
Amber Benning said that Duluth has completed their elections and Kari Amstutz was elected the 2000-01 UMDSA President.

MORRIS
Chaz Rice reported that their elections had also finished and Prince Amattoe was elected MCSA President and Tim Dunn is the SSCC representative for 2000-01. MCSA is now busy with other committee appointments.

MSA
Jason Reed reported that Matt Clark and Rachel Boeke were elected MSA President and Vice President. The Reps to Regents will be elected on Friday. MSA passed some bylaw changes at the last meeting. At the SLC meeting last week, Ben Solomon was elected interim president. SLC will be fighting to combat another year of tuition increases. He then noted that at an FCC meeting it was stated that tuition would need to be raised 40% to bring faculty salaries up to a competitive level. This issue will need to be addressed.

GAPSA
Paul Enever stated that the fees committee report was accepted and GAPSA approved changes to the selection committee. He then noted that he was elected the graduate Committee on Committees representative for 2000-01.

There was no Crookston report.

4. 2000-01 SSCC CHAIR ELECTIONS

Aaron Street, Vice Chair, accepted nominations for 2000-01 SSCC Chair. Jason Reed was the only member nominated and he was approved without dissent.

5. COMMITTEE BUSINESS FOR 2000-01

The committee made the following list of potential agenda items for 2000-01:

6. OTHER BUSINESS

Jason Reed discussed the Diversity Committee which was not approved by the Senate. A joint faculty/student committee might be assembled to look at the lack of minority faculty recruitment on campus. Rusty Barcelo is in favor of this effort.

The committee then discussed the senator orientation for the fall. To improve socializing between the students, ice breaker games and paragraphs of information were suggested, and increased coordinate campus involvement should be looked into. It was decided that a subcommittee of SSCC, including Aaron Street, Meggan Ellingboe, Khaled Dajani, Jason Reed, and Percy Chaby, would meet over the summer to work on this event.

Jason Reed said that he has been considering whether changing the Student Senate meetings to later in the day would increase attendance. The committee disagreed since no one wants to stay late on campus and it would be hard to schedule administrators.

The committee then discussed whether the student reps to regents should be invited to an SSCC meeting next year. Members agreed that it would build connections and let the two groups coordinate efforts on important topics. It was decided that the coordinate campus reps to regents would be scheduled in one semester and the Twin Cities reps to regents in the other. Members also commented that the reps to regents should be invited to the orientation.

With no further business Jason Reed thanked everyone for their work this year and adjourned the meeting.
