Resolution on Email to Faculty Encouraging Release of Course Evaluations

Whereas, student course evaluation information aids students in choosing teaching styles and course designs that best fit their individual learning styles, and

Whereas, the Student Senate has spent immense time and energy throughout the past decade, though evaluation revision, to make available student course evaluation information for the general student body seeking to learn more about and subsequently enter courses at the University of Minnesota, and

Whereas, the 2009-10 Student Senate wishes to complete this task, by making this information current in substantial amounts readily available for students via the Student One-Stop web page, and

Whereas, student Senate Chair Kathy Julik-Heine, in coordination with University of Minnesota Vice Provost and Dean Robert McMaster, has identified that a major obstacle in making this information available to students is the lack of faculty opting to release the information.

Whereas, discussion with Vice Provost McMaster further determined that a direct e-mail from students informing faculty of their option to release student course evaluation information may prove to be a persuasive tactic in garnering a higher yield from faculty in releasing information;

Therefore, be it resolved that the Student Senate:

a) Endorse the drafting of an e-mail to be sent of behalf of to students to faculty informing them of their option to release student course evaluation data and encouraging them to do so.

b) As individuals, make a commitment to informing their own faculty of the option to release data and encouraging them to do so.
