Guidelines

for Students Requesting Modifications to

the Liberal Education Requirements due to Disability

University Policy: Upon request from disabled students, University policy calls for reasonable accommodations to be made for students with disabilities. It is the responsibility of students with disabilities, however, to seek available assistance at the University and to make their needs know. In order to be considered for reasonable accommodations, students must have a documented disability condition as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1932 and provide documentation from an approved licensed professional of such a disability condition to Disability Services (DS).

UMTC Liberal Education Requirements: The UMTC Liberal Education (LE) requirements became effective for all new freshmen as of fall 1994, and for all new students as of fall 1996 on the Twin Cities campus. The LE requirements consist of the diversified core, the designated themes of liberal education, and the writing skills requirement. The Council on Liberal Education is responsible for the implementation and maintenance of the LE curriculum. Courses approved for the diversified core and the designated themes are listed in the Class Schedule, section 4. Students may choose from among any of the courses listed in the Class Schedule to fulfill the LE requirements. Until fall 1999, the current collegiate writing requirements will remain in effect.

Studentís Role: It is the studentís responsibility to substantiate a history of learning problems. Students who wish to request a modification of the UMTC LE requirements must submit a complete petition packet. A complete petition packet includes: a personal statement, describing how their disability has impacted their ability to complete the LE requirement; a Summary of Assessment Information from their DS Specialist, a completed CLE petition form and a copy of the studentís transcript. Only complete packets will be reviewed. Petitions may be turned into the Council on Liberal Education in 135 Johnston Hall.

Council on Liberal Educationís Role: Upon reviewing the studentís petition, the Council will notify the student within 10 working days of the decision. A copy of the letter will be sent to the studentís advising office and to the studentís Disabilities Specialist. While the Councilís decision is considered final, decisions cannot be made on the basis of incomplete information and the Council will notify the student of the additional information that is needed. Students may repetition the Council if their circumstances change significantly..
