Native of St. Paul, Minnesota; graduate of the University of Minnesota with a B.S.L., 1949, and an LL.B., 1951, and of the University of Michigan with an LL.M., 1952, and S.J.D., 1962; professor of law, University of Iowa, since 1954; vice president of academic affairs and dean of the faculties, University of Iowa, 1964­69; president, University of Iowa, 1969­81, now president emeritus; president, Field Museum of Natural History, 1981­96, now president emeritus; first chair of the University of Iowa Human Rights Committee; board and committee member of numerous arts and humanities organizations; one of the first winners of the National Endowment for the Humanities Charles Frankel Prize

Because you are one of the most important and distinguished figures in American education today; because you guided the University of Iowa through tumultuous times with adroitness and grace, and under your leadership the university grew in strength and stature; because you put the Field Museum of Natural History on solid financial footing and rejuvenated its mission; because of your lifelong commitment to societal justice; because you have been a passionate defender of human rights and a tireless advocate for opening up opportunities for all; because you are now teaching a new generation of law students with the same creativity and energy that have marked your whole career

Native of Tennessee; graduate of Oberlin College with a B.A. in mathematics, 1947, and the University of Minnesota with an M.A. in journalism, 1948; distinguished journalist, writer, and commentator for almost 50 years; the only journalist to be awarded the coveted Sigma Delta Chi medallion three years in a row; ambassador to Finland during the Kennedy administration; director of the U.S. Information Agency during the Johnson administra-tion, and the first African American to sit with the President's cabinet and on the National Security Council; author of eight books; nationally syndicated columnist; founder of the Project Excellence scholarship program

Because your career across five decades has been marked by an unwavering commitment to fairness, accuracy, and integrity; because your fearless reporting helped to expose and reverse segregation in our country; because you have been an eloquent voice against racism and a defender of human freedom and equality for people everywhere; because the scholarship program you established has started thousands of young African Americans on their way to college and strong careers; because your words have opened people's eyes and spoken to their hearts; because you have brought pride to Minnesota as a renowned journalist, ambassador, and adviser to presidents and world leaders
