Because you are one of the most important and distinguished figures in American education today; because you guided the University of Iowa through tumultuous times with adroitness and grace, and under your leadership the university grew in strength and stature; because you put the Field Museum of Natural History on solid financial footing and rejuvenated its mission; because of your lifelong commitment to societal justice; because you have been a passionate defender of human rights and a tireless advocate for opening up opportunities for all; because you are now teaching a new generation of law students with the same creativity and energy that have marked your whole career
