| Preface to First Online Edition
The University of Minnesota Style Manual was first printed
in 1979. A revised edition with minor changes was printed in 1989.
The Style Manual continues to be in high demand and in wide
use by people from both the University of Minnesota community and
across the country.
In this online edition, the University Policies section has been
revised to reflect changes in graphic standards and publication
policies. Basic grammar and style rules have changed very little.
You will notice that some explanations were expanded or examples
were added to clarify rules, and some examples were updated.
The role of computers and desktop publishing in creating professional-looking
type is addressed, especially in the "Punctuation" chapter
and the Production section, and a new chapter on "Cyberstyle" has
been added. The bibliography has been expanded, and the recommended
dictionaries are Merriam Websters Collegiate Dictionary and Websters
Third International Unabridged Dictionary. Regarding University
of Minnesota rules, note this change: delete the apostrophe with
the word regents, as in regents professor or regents meeting.
