Daniel Wolter became the director of the University News Service in February 2005.  His responsibilities include overseeing central media relations for one of the largest research Universities in the world by managing the proactive positioning of the university in national, state and local media; issues and crisis management; and using earned media to further the university’s public policy agenda.

Prior to joining the News Service, Wolter served as director of communications for Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty from his transition in December 2003 until late 2004.  In that role, he oversaw all media relations for the governor, lieutenant governor and state agencies.

Before joining Gov. Pawlenty’s staff, Wolter served in the Bush Administration in Washington, DC as director of speechwriting for the United States Department of Agriculture and Secretary of Agriculture Ann M. Veneman.

A native of Waverly, Iowa, Wolter began his career as speechwriter and deputy communications director for Iowa Gov. Terry E. Branstad from 1994 to 1998, where he also coordinated policy and constituent relations for several key state agencies, including the Departments of Transportation, Commerce and Human Rights.

In 1998, Wolter served as press secretary for former Tennessee Gov. and U.S. Secretary of Education Lamar Alexander, who ran for President.  In 1999, he became Executive Director of the Delaware Republican Party and later moved to Minnesota to work as a Senior Account Executive at Weber Shandwick Worldwide, an international public relations firm.  Wolter was named director of public affairs for Minnesota Speaker of the House Steve Sviggum and then-Majority Leader Tim Pawlenty in 2001.

In early 2005, Wolter was appointed by Gov. Pawlenty to represent northern Dakota County on the Twin Cities Metropolitan Council.  He was reappointed to that position in 2007 and his term ends in January 2011,  Pawlenty also named Wolter to serve on the Minnesota Commission on National and Community Service.

Daniel Wolter earned his bachelor’s degree cum laude from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa in 1993, and is currently pursuing a Master of Public Affairs degree from the University of Minnesota’s Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs.  He lives in Eagan, Minnesota.
