As assistant director for national media relations, Patty Mattern works to expand the University’s media footprint through national and international print and broadcast media outlets. She works closely with faculty experts and finds opportunities for those professors to showcase their expertise and research through the media.
Mattern joined the News Service in 2002 as a public relations representative after 10 years as a reporter at the St. Cloud Times. During her tenure at the Times, she was a local and national award-winning reporter covering K-12 schools, cops and courts, environment, diversity and county government. Mattern’s investigative reporting at the Times earned her national and state awards for outstanding achievements in upholding the First Amendment.
Prior to her work at the St. Cloud Times, Mattern served as a copy editor and reporter for the Aberdeen American News, a Knight-Ridder newspaper in Mattern’s hometown of Aberdeen, S.D. There she covered the cops and courts beat where her stories earned her several state awards from the Associated Press and the South Dakota Newspaper Association.
In 1989, Mattern graduated from the College of St. Benedict, St. Joseph, Minn., with a bachelor’s degree in English and a minor in communications and media. Mattern continues her education with the University and lives in Maple Grove, Minn.
