MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL ( 2/15/2008 ) -- The University of Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletics Department and the Office of Equity and Diversity will host 200 students from Maxfield Elementary School in St. Paul and Richard Green Central Park School in Minneapolis for an essay contest from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19 at Williams Arena, 1925 University Ave. S.E. Minneapolis. The essay contest is part of the U of M's Black History Month celebration. The students, grades 5 to 6, have been assigned a writing task: to write an essay about a famous African American in Minnesota history. They will submit the essays before Feb. 19 and U of M athletes will read and select the winners. On Feb. 19, students will meet with Gopher athletes at 11 a.m. At 11:45, Gopher basketball coaches Tubby Smith and Pam Borton, Vice President and Vice Provost of Equity and Diversity Rusty Barcelo and associate athletic director Leo Lewis will welcome the students. After lunch, the visitors will tour Williams Arena and the Sports Pavilion. The essay contest winners will be announced at about 1:30 p.m. ---------- |
