MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL ( 12/6/2007 ) -- Professor Maureen Weiss in the School of Kinesiology at the University of Minnesota was named the 2008 chair of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports (PCPFS) Science Board. The PCPFS Science Board's activities include review and input on the long-standing President's Challenge program, as well as many other initiatives related to physical activity and health during one's life.

Weiss brings years of professional service experience to the board. As a professor in the School of Kinesiology at the U of M's College of Education and Human Development, her research is on the psychological and social development of children and adolescents through participation in sport and physical activity, with particular interests in self-perceptions, motivation, observational learning, character development and social relationships. She is also the co-director of the Tucker Center for Research on Girls and Women in Sport.

Past appointments include president of the North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity, president for the Association for the Advancement of Applied Sport Psychology, and president of the Research Consortium of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. She was also chair of the Sport Psychology Academy and chair of the Youth Sport Coalition.

The President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports is an advisory committee of volunteer citizens who advise the President of the United States through the Secretary of Health and Human Services about physical activity, fitness and sports in America. Through its programs and partnerships with the public, private and non-profit sectors, the council serves as a catalyst to promote health, physical activity, fitness and enjoyment for people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities through participation in physical activity and sports. The twenty council members are nominated by the previous council.

The PCPFS Science Board was formed in 2003 to ensure that the messages and programs of the council are scientifically sound. The board includes 10 scholars from across the nation who were selected by previous council board members due to their significant contributions to the research and science of physical activity, fitness, health and sports.

Weiss officially took over as chair at the council's annual meeting in Washington D.C. on Friday, Nov. 30. For the next three quarterly phone conferences among board members, Weiss will be the presider. She will also preside over the next annual meeting in December of 2008, when the next board members will be selected.
