University of Minnesota incoming class best academically prepared in history, Provost says~ Systemwide enrollment up slightly for fall 2007 ~
MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL ( 10/4/2007 ) -- The University of Minnesota's Fall 2007 freshman class is the best academically prepared in history, university officials announced today. Additionally, across all of its campuses, university enrollment is up 0.53 percent over last year - or 346 more students. The Twin Cities campus saw an increase of approximately one percent. "Once again, we had a record-setting level of applicants and a freshman class better prepared for academic success than ever before," said Provost Tom Sullivan. "The progress we're making academically through our strategic positioning work is also evident in the significant increase in applications." The percentage of new freshman on the Twin Cities campus who graduated in the top 10 percent of their high school class increased from 39 percent in 2006 to 44 percent in 2007. The average ACT score continued a six-year trend of improvement, reaching 25.9 this fall, up from 25.2 last year. In addition, the number of National Merit Scholars in the freshman class increased from 74 in fall 2006 to 96 this semester. More than 26,000 applications were received on the Twin Cities campus for a freshman class that totaled 5,280. Total enrollment for the campus is 50,883, with 28,703 undergraduate students, 14,167 graduate students, 3,616 professional degree students and 4,397 non-degree seeking students. Additionally, the campus saw a jump of 18.48 percent in transfer students, increasing from 1,645 to 1,949. The number of students of color in the freshman class remained steady at 20 percent. There were notable increases in the number of Hispanic, American Indian and international students in the freshman class. At the university's other campuses, fall 2007 undergraduate enrollment saw a significant increase on the Crookston campus - 8.5 percent over last year. The Duluth campus saw a slight increase in undergraduate (0.1 percent), graduate (0.4 percent) and professional student (2.9 percent) enrollment. The Morris campus saw a slight decline in undergraduate enrollment (1.5 percent). Overall, the university's total system wide enrollment for fall 2007 is 66,099.
