MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL ( 9/11/2007 ) -- University of Minnesota General Counsel Mark Rotenberg announced today the appointment of J.T. Bruett as director of athletic compliance. The Office of Athletic Compliance works with the University's Intercollegiate Athletics Department overseeing NCAA, Big Ten and WCHA rules compliance for 25 teams and more than 700 student athletes.

"I have great confidence in J.T.'s ability to lead the university at the critical intersection of athletic achievement and rules compliance," Rotenberg said. "He has the knowledge, ability and personal presence to help our tremendous coaching staff and student athletes succeed the right way -- by following the rules. J.T. was trained and mentored by former Compliance Director Frank Kara, who created one of the finest compliance offices in the United States. I know J.T. will be his worthy successor."

"I am pleased and honored to be named the director of athletic compliance," Bruett said. "Together with our outstanding coaches and compliance staff, I look forward to promoting a culture of compliance that is a model for Division 1 athletics across the country."

Bruett is a graduate of the University of Minnesota and has a master's degree in athletic administration from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is a former student-athlete in the University of Minnesota's baseball program, and was a professional baseball player for eight years with the Minnesota Twins and other baseball clubs. He has served as assistant and associate athletic director of athletic compliance for six years and served as interim director of athletic compliance for the past year.

Bruett succeeds Kara, who was responsible for re-establishing the compliance program at the University and guiding the institution successfully through a six-year NCAA probationary period.
