U of M honors recipients of Disability Services Scholarships
MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL ( 9/4/2007 ) -- Six University of Minnesota students will receive a Robert and Gail Buuck Scholarship and Angela Brooke Warner Cystic Fibrosis Scholarship for Disability Services at a reception from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at Coffman Union, 300 Washington Ave. S.E. Minneapolis. The purpose of the scholarships is to provide access to higher education, opportunities for enhancing or supporting learning and support for guidance or training in the development of self-advocacy and leadership for students with disabilities at the University of Minnesota. The Buuck Family Scholarship, established in 2004, is the university's first fully endowed scholarship for students with disabilities. Alumnus Robert Buuck and his wife, Gail, made a donation to the university's Office of Disability Services to establish the endowed scholarship fund after learning in a newspaper article that the university did not have scholarships for students with disabilities. The Angela Brooke Warner CF Scholarship Endowment Fund was established in 2005 by the Angela Warner Foundation to honor and memorialize the life of Angela Brooke Warner. Born March 11, 1981, to Donald and Linda Warner of Eden Prairie, Angela died Feb. 6, 2003, at the age of 21 after a lifelong battle against cystic fibrosis. Despite her illness, she strived for excellence. She was an honors graduate and varsity cheerleader at Eden Prairie High School. The 2007-2008 recipients of the Buuck Scholarship Fund for Disability Services are: Jenna Aaland is a three-time recipient of this scholarship. Jenna is finishing up her public health degree and feels medicine is her true calling. She has been applying to physician assistant programs across the country. Kimberly Conlon will be a sophomore in the Institute of Technology with plans to major in Biomedical Engineering because she loves to help others and wants to work to improve lives. This is Conlon's second year as a Buuck scholarship recipient. Kotumu Kamara, a sophomore, is pursuing a major in global studies and a minor in social justice. Kamara is a refugee from Liberia whose passion is working to contribute to world-wide peace, security and justice. Shade Osifuye, a past recipient of the Buuck Scholarship, will be in her senior year completing her bachelor of science degree through the Inter-College Program. Her academic concentrations are in life sciences and African American studies. Her goal is to attend a pathologist assistant program so that she may further pursue her study of diseases, particularly those diseases that affect African-Americans. Corrine Spading, a two-time Buuck Scholarship recipient, continues to pursue her bachelor of arts in child psychology. Her career goal is to become a child life specialist working between doctors and young patients to promote the best experience possible. This coming semester, Spading will be studying abroad in the Mediterranean. The 2007-2008 recipient of the Angela Brooke Warner CF Scholarship Endowment Fund is Jonathon Flath is a transfer student to the University of Minnesota's Institute of Technology from the Milwaukee School of Engineering. He plans to major in mathematics to capitalize on one of his greatest strengths and passions, which is his analytic ability. ---------- |
