The Supreme Court ruled today that Americans have a right to own guns for self-defense and hunting. The court’s 5-4 decision, the first major ruling on gun rights in U.S. history, struck down the District of Columbia’s 32 year ban on handguns. A U of M expert who can speak on this case is:
Dale Carpenter, University of Minnesota Law School Professor
Carpenter is an expert in constitutional law, the First Amendment, sexual orientation and the law, and commercial law. Carpenter says the court made the correct decision on both counts. “This is a right that is explicitly protected in the U.S. Constitution and it should be guarded against infringement. D.C's gun ban was the most extreme gun law in the nation, so now people will be thinking how the ruling impacts less onerous gun laws.”
