(9/23/2008) Scholarly and cultural events at the U this fall are some of the richest and most enlightening in the Twin Cities, but not everyone knows they're invited. To help solve that problem, the Office for Scholarly and Cultural Affairs asked University Relations' marketing department to help bring these events together under one theme. Out of their work emerged a concept: Art to Z.

Avoiding Identity Theft at the U
(9/16/2008) Customized e-mail phishing attacks, known as "spear phishing," are on the rise. Some attacks against the U have been effective at tricking students, faculty, and staff into divulging personal information. A number of features are usually common to phishing attacks. Learn more.

U unveils plans for Minnesota Tribal Nations Plaza
(9/15/2008) The University of Minnesota unveiled the design and name of a new plaza outside TCF Bank Stadium to honor Minnesota's American Indian nations, made possible through a $12 million gift from the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community.

(8/26/2008) Randy Croce, a video producer in the labor education service at Carlson's Center for Human Resources and Labor Studies, helps the U's Labor Education Service create videos to encourage all parties in conflict to find common ground.

UMF names new CEO; U announces record year for giving
(8/14/2008) On the day that the U announced another record year of giving by donors, the University of Minnesota Foundation named L. Steven Goldstein as its new president and CEO, effective immediately. He replaces Gerald B. Fischer, who is stepping down after 18 years in the position.

The model U
(7/29/2008) Fleet Services held a green open house showcasing new hybrid additions to its fleet of vehicles, available for rental by U employees and departments. One U employee took the opportunity to drive a car that, unlike his own, not only had a gas/electric engine but a functional air-conditioner.

The evolution of the welcome mat
(7/29/2008) More than 5,000 first-year students will participate in academic and student development programs during Welcome Week from August 27 to September 1. Faculty, staff, and current U students are working to make the week memorable through a number of unique experiences.

A gathering place for great minds
(7/23/2008) The U's William I. Fine Theoretical Physics Institute has had a distinctly cosmopolitan flavor since it opened more than 20 years ago. Its leading researchers come from Russia, and they study mathematical models and abstractions of physics that lay the groundwork for advances in a large number of technologies that affect our lives.

Help Yourself to Health
(7/15/2008) The U's Farmers Market is back for a delectable fourth season at its location along Church Street. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesdays through Oct. 8, more than a dozen vendors with 20 booths will sell locally grown flowers, fruits, and vegetables. The season's theme "What's not to like about green?" emphasizes the benefits of eating local.

U wins top award for Driven to Discover campaign
(7/8/2008) The University of Minnesota's "Driven to Discover" campaign was recently awarded the Gold "Effie" by the American Marketing Association. The "Effie," a globally recognized award, honors client and agency teams who tackled a marketplace challenge and achieved measurable results.

Blank walls do not talk
(7/1/2008) Since 1934, the Weisman or its predecessor, Northrop Auditorium's Little Gallery, has encouraged faculty, staff, and students to rent original artwork and print reproductions--artwork that might otherwise sit in the Weisman's basement. More than 800 pieces are in circulation and about 300 framed, ready-to-hang original artworks are available for rent at the Weisman store, including prints, one-of-a-kind watercolor and oil paintings, and photographs.

Regents approve FY09 budget, light-rail resolution
(6/17/2008) The Board of Regents on Friday approved a new operating budget for the University of Minnesota for the upcoming 2008-09 fiscal year. It also approved a resolution to pursue the Met Council-approved plan to run the Central Corridor light-rail transit line at-grade along Washington Avenue on the Twin Cities campus.

Former regent and UMC provost dies
(6/4/2008) Stanley Sahlstrom, who helped transition the University of Minnesota, Crookston campus from a residential high school to a two-year technical college, has died. The former provost and U regent was 87.

Faster wireless Internet planned for Twin Cities and Rochester campuses

(4/18/2008) A recent $3 million commitment to the U's Bell Museum of Natural history is for a new museum facility to open in 2010. The remarkable gift comes from the James Ford Bell Foundation, which affirms the importance of the Bell Museum as the state's natural history museum.

Celebrating public engagement
(4/15/2008) The University of Minnesota will host its second annual Public Engagement Day April 22 on the Twin Cities campus. A number of changes have been made since the inaugural event. For example the addition of Public Engagement days at the University's other campuses; upcoming are Duluth, April 16 and Crookston, April 17.

Regents approve contracts with food and beverage vendors
(4/11/2008) On April 11, the Board of Regents approved four long-term contracts with vendors for food and beverage service on University of Minnesota campuses.

Happy birthday, Minnesota!
(4/2/2008) To commemorate the state's 150th birthday, University of Minnesota faculty are leading four discussions this month on issues facing Minnesota's past, present, and future. Topics are the evolution of the suburbs, natural resources, demographic changes, and protecting the public's health.

(3/28/2008) Last fall, University Dining Services collected 78 tons of compost material from its kitchens and restaurants, and the UDS Green Team played a big role--helping the lunch crowd identify its compost-friendly waste.

New financial system continues progress toward July 1 go-live
(3/25/2008) CUFS is going away when the U unveils its new financial system July 1. Enterprise Financial System team members are now testing the new system, which offers more flexibility in gathering data. About 2,800 U employees will be trained to use the system.

U comments on central corridor LRT alignment
(2/26/2008) On February 27, the Metropolitan Council will vote on the route alignment for the Central Corridor light rail transit (CCLRT) line. Kathleen O'Brien, the University's vice president for University Services, released a statement on the alignment.

American Indian Cultural House helps U students succeed in college
(1/8/2008) The U's American Indian Cultural House helps American Indian students adjust to life on the Twin Cities campus. It is the first of its kind among Big Ten universities and third in the nation after Harvard and Dartmouth.

U gets creative, wins award
