How To Connect 10.4.x Macintosh Clients

Download the client

  1. Browse to the Downloads page and click on Macintosh File Services Connection Tool.
  2. Double click the umnad_1.1.3.dmg file.
  3. Drag the UMN Active Directory file to your Applications folder.

Configure Kerberos

  1. Open UMN Active Directory.
  2. Go to the UMN Active Directory menu and select Configure Kerberos...
  3. When prompted login with local administrator credentials.
  4. If there is a previously existing config file there you will be informed it is being renamed. Click OK.
  5. A dialog will pop up telling you your computer is now configured to use Active Directory. Click OK.

Set your prefrences

  1. Open UMN Active Directory.
  2. Go to the UMN Active Directory menu and select Preferences...
  3. In the General tab you can choose whether or not the application remembers your Internet ID, updates itself automatically and tries to login immediately when launched.
  4. The Shares tab contains the list of shares the application will mount when you use it to login to Active Directory. Add them in the form of smb://sharename.ad.umn.edu/sharename$
  5. NEW As of version 1.1.3, if you have a personal share, you will need to add it to this list. It will not be mounted automatically as not all users have a personal share provided in this manner. (internetID.ad.umn.edu/internetID$)
  6. Click the Save button.

Logging in to Active Directory

  1. Open UMN Active Directory.
  2. Click the Log In button.
  3. If you have not saved your Internet ID in the preferences you will be asked for it now. Enter it
  4. You will be prompted for your password. Enter your Internet Password.
  5. Your shares will mount on the desktop.

Logging out of Active Directory

  1. Click the Log Out button.
