How To Reset 10.5.x Macintosh Client Keychain

After a password is changed via http://www.umn.edu/myaccount, the keychain on MacOS becomes unusable. This is because the passowrd for the user login keychain is still set to the old password. Users will need to either change the keychain's password to match their new Internet password, or, if the old password is not known, delete the keychain and allow a new login keychain to be generated.

Change Keychain Password

  1. Open Keychain Access within Macintosh HD -> Applications -> Utilities.
  2. If the Keychain list is not available, click on the button in the lower left corner.
  3. Select the login keychain
  4. From the Edit menu, select Change Password for Keychain "login"...
  5. Enter the old password, the new password, and the confirmation of the new password, then click OK.
  6. You may need to logoff and back on for all functionality to work again.

Delete Keychain

  1. Open Keychain Access within Macintosh HD -> Applications -> Utilities.
  2. If the Keychain list is not available, click on the button in the lower left corner.
  3. Select the login keychain
  4. From the File menu, select Delete Keychain "login"
  5. Click on the Delete Referenes & Files button.
  6. You will need to logoff and back on for a new keychain to be created.
