Awards

Maroon & Gold Awards are updated each year as a new awards committee is formed. Below are the types of awards given in 2007.

2007 Awards

  • One MARGO Award, selected from all entries for the most elegant solution within the means available. The department receives $500 for professional development of communications staff, along with a framed certificate.

  • One MIKE Award is chosen by popular vote of Communicators Forum members attending the Forum's annual conference. The winning department is announced during the closing session of the conference. The traveling trophy is engraved and presented for display in the department's offices for one year.

Awards are engraved with your department's name to recognize the collaboration and support necessary to achieve communications excellence.

Not your typical certificate or trophy! The Maroon & Gold awards are unique: these plaques, custom designed by Nance Longley, College of Education and Human Development, are in the shape of a well-known icon of communication: the word bubble.

Maroon award sample. The unique shape is emphasized by a bold black outline. The smooth acrylic allows a colored background for letters engraved on a contrasting layer. The Gold Award plaques are 12x9.5 inches, standing out about a half-inch from the wall. The Maroon Award is 8x10 inches.

    MIKE Award

The MIKE Award is an Astatic Golden Eagle D104 microphone reissued in 1976 in limited commemorative editions by the Astatic Microphone Company. Like the word bubble icon, this trophy represents communication but on an amplified level, as appropriate for the people's choice award. The D104 model was first manufactured in 1933, the year the company was incorporated. The first crystal microphone, it was known for high sensitivity to ambient sound. Want to know more?
