Importing Locally Stored Mail (POP) in to the Outlook Connector

Note to POP users: Do not be alarmed if you do not see all of your messages after setting up the Oracle connector. Follow the instructions below to add these folders to your profile.

If you have difficulty importing your email using these instructions, please call the helpline at 612-301-HELP, or 1-HELP on campus, for assistance.

  1. Go to the Start menu and click on Control Panel. If you are on Windows 2000 or earlier, you will need to go to Start, Settings, and click on Control Panel.

  2. Inside the Control Panel, you will see the Mail icon. If you are using Windows XP, and do not see the Mail icon, look to the left of the Control Panel window. You will see a link that says Switch to Classic View. Click this link. The options displayed in the Control Panel will change to include the Mail icon.


  3. When you see the Mail icon, double-click it. This will open the Mail Setup - Oracle Connector for Outlook dialog.


  4. In the Mail Setup, click the Data Files... button. This will open the Outlook Data Files dialog.


  5. Click the Add... button. This will open the New Outlook Data File dialog. Under Types of Storage, select Office Outlook Personal Folders File (.pst) if you are using Outlook 2003. Otherwise, choose Outlook 97-2002 Personal Folder File (.pst). Click OK.


  6. This will open the Create or Open Outlook Date File dialog.


  7. There will be two or more .pst files in the window.

  8. You will need to select the file that contains your previously downloaded mail.
    1. Do Not select the files aleady listed in the Office Outlook Data Files box, or any file named similarly to yourInternetID.email.umn.edu.pst.
    2. The Outlook.pst file, or the file that has been most recently modified, most likely holds your mail. You can check the last modified date by right-clicking the file and selecting Properties

  9. Single-click the file you have selected, and click OK. This will open the Personal Folder dialog.


  10. Click OK.

  11. This will add the file to the list in the Outlook Data Files box.


  12. Click Close in the Outlook Data Files box.

  13. Click Close in the Mail Setup box.

  14. Open Outlook. You will see you old mail within the Personal Folders, listed under Oracle - Public Folders. You may need to expand the Personal Folders directory. You can do this by clicking the plus sign to the left of the Personal Folders.


  15. If you notice that you do not have all of your mail (eg. archives, etc.), repeat these steps to add other .pst files to the Outlook Data Files.
