2. UMCal Windows Desktop Client Requirements

What versions of Windows will work?

The UMCal Windows Desktop client requires one of the following versions of Windows:

  • Windows 98/ME
  • Windows NT
  • Windows 2000
  • Windows XP

Important: If you are installing Oracle Calendar desktop client for Windows on a Windows NT computer, you must install Microsoft Windows Service Pack 6 or later.

Important: Administrative privileges are required to install Oracle Calendar desktop client for Windows on Windows NT, 2000, and XP.

Other general requirements:

  • 25 MB disk space
  • 30 MB RAM minimum

3. Installing UMCal Windows Desktop Client

Downloading the Client

To download the latest version of the software, go to: http://www.umn.edu/umcal/download

Installing the Client

  1. Locate the file you downloaded to your computer, which is likely on your desktop. Double-click on this file to begin extracting its content. Be patient as this may take several minutes.


  2. At the setup welcome screen, click Next to continue.


  3. At the "Destination Folder" screen, select the location where you want to install the program and then click Next.


  4. When the program is ready to install, click Install to start the installation process.


  5. When the program has finished installing, click on Finish to exit the installation process.


4. Configuring UMCal Windows Desktop Client

Creating a Profile

  1. Locate the application folder (Oracle Calendar 9.0.4) and click on the "Oracle Calendar 9.0.4" icon. The Sign-In screen will be displayed.


  2. Click on the Other button. The connection manager screen will be displayed.


  3. Click on the New button. The Connection Editor screen will be displayed.
    Enter the following information:

    User Input: UMCal Settings

            Connection Name: UMCal
            Server: umcal.umn.edu
            
    Click on the Lookup button. The Connection Configuration screen will be displayed.


  4. Select the Configure at login from user name radio button. Click on Configure.


  5. Click the OK button and the connection manager screen will be displayed.


  6. Click on UMCal within the window and then click the Make Default button. Click Ok and the Sign-In screen will be displayed.


  7. Enter your UofM Internet ID and password.


  8. Click on the Sign-In button.
  9. If you are prompted to create an off-line agenda, click the Yes button. This will allow you to view your information and work offline if the UMCal server is unavailable.

5. Uninstalling UMCal

Uninstall

If you later want to remove the client for Replace use the following command:

  1. Double-click Add/Remove Programs from the Control Panel.
  2. Choose Oracle Calendar 9.0.4 and click Add/Remove.

6. Hiding the unison.log file

Desktop Shortcut

When starting the Oracle Calendar desktop client using a shortcut you have created, a file named unison.log may appear on the desktop.

This log file can be useful for troubleshooting. Instead of deleting it or letting it clutter your desktop, you can have the information saved in your Oracle Calendar directory by following these steps.

  1. Right-click on the shortcut you use to start the calendar client and select Properties from the contextual menu.
  2. In the properties window change the Start in: location to

    User Input: Start In Location

    "C:\Program Files\Oracle\Calendar"
  3. Click OK to save the changes.
  4. Delete the unison.log file from your desktop.
