Summary: This guide will show you how to set up UMCal to sync to your Palm devices for Mac OS X systems.

1. Pre-Install Notes

Things to know:

  • Task synchronization does not work with the current version of the sync tool.
  • You do not need to install the Oracle Calendar to use Palm synchronization
  • You do need to have the Palm Desktop installed.
  • You must HotSync your Palm at least once before installing the Palm sync tool.
  • Do not synchronize your device with the UMCal sync tool from more than one computer.

2. UMCal Palm Sync for MacOS X Requirements

Mac OS X Requirements

  • Mac OS X 10.1.4 and above
  • 15 MB disk space
  • 8MB Ram

Palm Requirements

  • Palm Desktop v4
  • Palm OS 3.5.x, Palm OS 4.x, Palm OS 5.2.x
  • Note: Palm OS 5.4.x devices (Tungsten T5, Treo 650, etc.) are not supported for synchronization with Mac OS X at this time. Problems synchronizing Palm OS 4.5.x devices (specifically the Tungsten E) have also been encountered.

3. Installing UMCal Palm Sync for Mac OS X

Downloading the sync tool

To download the latest version of the software, go to: http://www.umn.edu/umcal/download

Installing the sync tool

  1. Double-click the file umcal-syncpalm-macOSX-<version>.hqx. This will automatically extract the installer OraCalSync_<version>-X.app. Double click the installer icon
  2. The installer will begin. When it finishes, the synchronization settings dialog will open. See Configure the Conduits below.
  3. After you double-click the installer, the following screen will appear. Click the lock icon in the lower left and type in your administrator password Click OK.


  4. The installer will search for the appropriate place to install the files. This may take a few minutes.


  5. When the installation is finished, click Done to exit.


4. Configuring UMCal Palm Sync for Mac OS X

Configuring the conduit

  1. The installer will install all three conduits by default: Events Conduit, Address Conduit and Tasks Conduit
    If want to use the palm Address Book or ToDo list, you will need to manually move them back to the Conduits folder from the Disabled Conduits folder
    Move the corresponding Oracle Calendar Conduit to the Disabled Conduits folder


  2. You will need to install the Oracle Calendar Sync application onto the handheld device.
    Open the Palm Desktop. Click on HotSync from the menu bar.
    Click on Install Handheld files.


  3. Click the Add To List button


  4. Navigate to the Add-on folder in the Palm folder (which is probably in the Applications folder) Click on Oracle Calendar Sync.prc and then click Add File


Configuring the handheld

  1. Open the Oracle Calendar application on the handheld


  2. Fill in the fields with the appropriate information:

    User Input: UMCal Settings

     USER: your internet id
     PASSWORD: your password
     CONNECT: To Server
     SERVER: umcal.umn.edu
     NODE: the node for your campus
     
     Faculty and staff:
       100 - Crookston
       200 - Duluth
       300 - Morris 
       400 - Twin Cities
    
     Students:
       100 - Crookston
       200 - Duluth
       300 - Morris 
       402 - Twin Cities
         


5. Common Errors

Palm Desktop Not Installed

If you have not previously installed the palm desktop software, you will see this error message.
