2. UMCal Linux Desktop Client Requirements

What versions of Linux will work?

The UMCal team has tested the following Linux distros, others may work with mixed results.

  • RedHat 9
  • Fedora Core 1
  • Gentoo
  • Mandrake 10
  • SuSe 8, 9

Important: All Linux installs will vary depending on what packages you select, UMCal Team tests on standard CD installs, no extra configurations. If you experience problems on a system that has been modified we advise that you use the web client located at https://umcal.umn.edu

Other general requirements:

  • X Window system, such as XFree or X.org
  • X Desktop system, such as KDE or Gnome
  • 34 MB disk space
  • 30 MB ram minimum

3. Installing UMCal Linux Desktop Client

Downloading the Client

To download the latest version of the software, go to: http://www.umn.edu/umcal/download

Extracting Files

User Input: Extract Downloaded File

cd /path/to/download
tar zxvf umcal-linuxclient-<version>.tar.gz

Installing the Client

  1. Locate the file you downloaded to your computer and uncompressed.
  2. Change directory to the installer folder.

    User Input: Change Directories

    cd OracleCalendar_inst
  3. There are three methods to isntalling the client: via the GUI, command line, and silent.
    If you choose command line you will be asked where to install without using the GUI.
    If you choose command line you will NOT be asked where to install and the default settings will be used.
    The following images are from the GUI install.
  4. To execute an install method type the following command:

    User Input: Enter install method

    sh <gui_install.sh | silent_install.sh | text_install.sh>
  5. At the welcome screen click Next to continue.


  6. At the "Destination Folder" screen, select the location where you want to install the client and then click Next.


  7. Select where you would like a link to be created. This will create a link called ocal that can be used to run the program.


  8. When the program is ready to install, click Install to start the installation process.


  9. When the program has finished installing, click on Finish to exit the installation process.


4. Launching UMCal Linux Desktop Client

Command Line Method

To start the client simply type ./ocal

Important: This assumes you created a link in your home directory or installed the client into your /usr/bin folder

Launcher Icon

  1. To create a launcher icon from KDE, for example, right click on your desktop and select Add then Special Button and finally Non-KDE Application


  2. Enter in the location of the link you created during the install for the Executable. Click on the icon box to select an icon you want to use.


5. Configuring UMCal Linux Desktop Client

Creating a Profile

  1. Using one of the methods above launch the client. The Sign-In screen will be displayed.


  2. Click on the Other button. The connection manager screen will be displayed.


  3. Click on the New button. The Connection Editor screen will be displayed.
    Enter the following information:

    User Input: UMCal Settings

            Connection Name: UMCal
            Server: umcal.umn.edu
            
    Click on the Lookup button. The Connection Configuration screen will be displayed.


  4. Select the Configure at login from user name radio button. Click on Configure.


  5. Click the Ok button and the connection manager screen will be displayed.


  6. Click on UMCal within the window and then click the Make Default button. Click Ok and the Sign-In screen will be displayed.


  7. Enter your UofM Internet ID and password.


  8. Click on the Sign-In button.
  9. If you are prompted to create an off-line agenda, click the Yes button. This will allow you to view your information and work offline if the UMCal server is unavailable.

6. Uninstalling UMCal Linux Desktop Client

Uninstall

If you later want to remove the client for linux use the following command:

User Input: Uninstall UMCal

rm -rf <install directory>/OracleCalendar
# Remove any symbolic links
rm ocal
