3. Upgrading from 9.0.4.x
If you are upgrading
Due to a minor, unresolved issue when upgrading to the 10.1.1.x synchronization tool from a 9.0.4.x tool, a separate upgrade guide has
not been provided. While the process of installing the newer sync tool over the older version typically works, this process may leave
HotSync without the Oracle conduits installed, preventing synchronization.
To upgrade the synchronization tool:
- Synchronize your device.
- Uninstall the Oracle Calendar Sync for Palm application from the Add/Remove Programs control panel.
- Install the newer version of the tool as described below. Your settings will be retained, though you should proceed through the
configuration steps below and verify that these settings remain correct.
4. Installing UMCal Palm Sync for Windows
Downloading the sync tool
To download the latest version of the software, go to: http://www.umn.edu/umcal/download
Installing the sync tool
- Double-click the file umcal-syncpalm-win-<version>.exe. This will launch the installer.
- If you are prompted to install the .NET Framework, you may bypass the installation; .NET is not required for standard sync
functionality.
- After you double-click the installer, the following screen will appear. Click Next.

- Choose the destination folder. The default folder is preferred. Click Next.

- Select your installation type, complete or custom. To install conduits for calendar, tasks, and contacts sychronization,
select Complete. To install only a subset of the conduits, select Custom. Click Next.

- Click Install at the next screen.

- You will receive a confirmation once the software has been
succesfully installed. Do NOT click Finish at this
point as the conduits may not be properly installed. Continue to the
next section of this document.

5. Before Synchronizing
Copy the timezone.ini
To prevent sychronization problems due to a known bug, navigate to C:\Program Files\Oracle\Oracle Calendar Sync for
Palm\, locate the timezone.ini file, and copy it to C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application
Data\Oracle\Oracle Calendar Sync for Palm.
Verify conduit installation and
settings In certain cases, the required conduits may not be installed properly or two entries may appear
for each synchronization type.
- Right-click on the HotSync Manager icon in your system tray and select Custom.
- Assuming a complete installation was performed, verify that one or both sets of the conduits listed below were installed:
New set (Palm OS >=5.4, some OS 5.2):
- Calendar (Oracle Calendar)
- Tasks (Oracle Calendar)
- Contacts (Oracle Calendar)
Old set (Palm OS <5.x):
- Date Book (Oracle Calendar)
- To Do List (Oracle Calendar)
- Address (Oracle Calendar)
If none of the conduits listed above appear, exit and restart the HotSync manager.
If the conduits are still not present, perform another installation of the sotware
(you do not need to uninstall the software first). Pay particular attention to
when you click Finish following the installation (as noted in the installation
steps).
- If both the new and old sets of conduits are present, individually open each conduit not in the set for your device, set the
synchronization action to Do Nothing, check Make Default, and click OK. Open each conduit in the new set, set the synchronization
action to Quick Synchronization, check Make Default, and click OK.
- If any of the conduits listed above, less the trailing (Oracle Calendar), are present, set the default
synchronization action for each to Do Nothing.
