Summary: This guide will show you how to set up UMCal to sync to your Palm device for Mac OS X systems. This guide also servers as the upgrade guide for users of the 9.0.4.2.0 and 9.0.4.2.1 sync tools.

UMCal Palm Sync 10g/9.0.4.2.11 for Mac OS X Installation & Upgrade

1. Pre-Install Notes

Things to know:

  • Contact synchronization does not work with the current version of the sync tool.
  • You do not need to install the Oracle Calendar to use Palm synchronization
  • You do need to have the Palm Desktop installed.
  • You must HotSync your Palm at least once before installing the Palm sync tool.
  • Do not synchronize your device with the UMCal sync tool from more than one computer.
  • Tungsten E, Tungsten T3, Zire 31, and Zire 72 users: apply the the PIM Support Update, dated August 31, 2004, before installing the sync tool.
  • Tungsten T5 users: apply the Tungsten T5 Update v1.1, dated 6/21/2005, before installing the sync tool.

2. UMCal Palm Sync for MacOS X Requirements

Mac OS X Requirements

  • Mac OS X 10.2.x-10.4.1
  • 5 MB disk space

Palm Requirements

  • Palm Desktop 4.0-4.2.1
  • Officially supported devices:
    • Tungsten T
    • Tungsten T3
    • Zire 31
    • Zire 72
    • Treo 600
    • Sony Clie PEG-TG50C
  • Additional devices tested at UMN for calendar and tasks:
    • Tungsten C

3. Installing UMCal Palm Sync for Mac OS X

Downloading the sync tool

To download the latest version of the software, go to: http://www.umn.edu/umcal/download

Installing the sync tool

  1. Double-click the umcal-syncpalm-macosx-<version>.dmg. This will open the disk image containing the installer.


  2. Open the disk image from your desktop, if necessary.


  3. Double-click the OracleSync Installer.pkg application, contained within the disk image.


  4. After the installer launches, click Continue.


  5. Select the drive to install the software on, then click Continue.


  6. Click Install.


  7. Once the installation is complete, click Close.


  8. After the installer has closed, open the Library folder on your computer, (top-level, not within your home folder), then the Application Support folder, then the Palm HotSync folder, then the Conduits folder. If any of the following files exist in the this folder, move them to the Disabled Conduits folder, also within /Library/Application Support/Palm Hotsync/:
    • Calendar Conduit
    • Datebook Conduit
    • Oracle Calendar Address Conduit
    • Tasks Conduit
    • ToDo Conduit



  9. While still in the /Library/Application Support/Palm Hotsync/Conduits folder, verify that the following files are present:
    • Oracle Calendar Events Conduit
    • Oracle Calendar Tasks Conduit
    • Address Conduit and/or Contacts Conduit

  10. Navigate to the /Applications/Palm/Add-on folder on your computer. Double-click the Oracle Calendar Sync.prc file.



  11. Close the Install Handheld Files window.

  12. Perform a HotSync and the file will be added to the handheld device.

4. Configuring UMCal Palm Sync for Mac OS X

Configuring the sync tool

  1. Synchronize your device; this will install the synchronization application on the device. As the application was not installed prior to this synchronization, you will receive a synchronization error, with the logs indicating that the Oracle Calendar failed to synchronize; you may ignore these errors.

  2. Open the Oracle Setup application on your device.


  3. Fill in the fields with the appropriate information:

    User Input: UMCal Settings

     USER: your internet id
     PASSWORD: your password
     CONNECT: To Server
     SERVER: umcal.umn.edu
     NODE: the node for your campus/group
     
       100 - Crookston
       200 - Duluth
       300 - Morris 
       400 - Rochester
    
     Twin Cities users, see below for node information.

    Twin Cities users should refer to http://www.umn.edu/umcal/nodes to determine their node assignment.



  4. Specific synchronization settings may be adjusted using the drop-down menu in the upper-right corner of the screen.

5. Common Errors

Palm Desktop Not Installed

If you have not previously installed the palm desktop software, you will see this error message.
