UMCal Outage Update
Tuesday 01.22.2007
At 2:25 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, Office of Information Technology (OIT) system administrators had to restart the UMCal server due to a unresponsive node. Various attempts were made to restart the individual node with no success. Unable to restart the individual node, OIT performed a restart to the entire UMCal system. This restart shut down all UMCal services including the Web application, sync services, Web services, and desktop client connections. The UMCal server was fully restored to functionality at 2:50 p.m. the same day.
The unresponsive node problem was traced back to an LDAP server that had been taken out of service for maintenance earlier in the day. It is believed that this problem also caused performance related issues experienced by users earlier in the day. Routinely, when the LDAP server is taken out of service for maintenance, another available server should take over UMCal operations automatically. OIT has opened a ticket with Oracle, UMCal's vendor, into the matter to prevent similar situations in the future.
