UMCal and DST Changes

Why is Daylight Saving Time Changing?

Beginning in March 2007, the Energy Policy Act of 2005 changes the dates for when daylight saving time (DST) starts and ends. Based on this change, daylight saving time now begins on the second Sunday in March, and ends on the first Sunday in November.
(Previously, Daylight Saving Time began on the first Sunday in April and ended on the last Sunday in October.)

Does This Affect Me?

Meetings between March 11 (the new start date) and April 1 (the old start date), 2007 may be one hour off because of the DST changes. This may also affect meetings between October 28 and November 4, 2007 (when DST ends), and similar ranges in future years.

Not everyone is affected by this change. You will be affected if:

  • You use a desktop client or the web client AND scheduled meetings more than one year in advance
  • You use the Oracle Connector for Outlook
  • You synchronize a device running a PocketPC/Windows Mobile operating system (like an Axim or iPAQ) with UMCal
  • You synchronize a device running Palm OS with UMCal using SyncML (wireless sync)

If You Are Affected

We are continuously working to update documentation and are investigating options to identify affected meetings. We will notify affected customers with additional information, and will assist with software updates and answer any other questions you may have. Write to umcal@umn.edu or call 1-HELP at 612.301.HELP (1-HELP on the Twin Cities campus).

Here is a list of issues and solutions:

Problem Resolution
You use the web or desktop client and have scheduled meetings more than one year in advance
  1. Open your calendar in the desktop or web client
  2. Check for meetings that appear incorrectly (one hour early or late) from:
    • March 11 to April 1, 2007
    • the last Sunday of Oct. and the first Sunday of Nov. for 2007 and future years
    • the second Sunday of Mar. and the first Sunday of Apr. for 2008 and future years
  3. Delete and recreate any meetings that appear incorrectly (these meetings were scheduled prior to February 5, 2006)
You use the Oracle Connector for Outlook (OCFO)
  1. Make sure you are running version 10.1.2.0.5 or later of OCFO; see http://www.umn.edu/umcal/ocfo/ for information on updating OCFO
  2. Update Windows time zone definitions; install this update (or run Windows Update and install the express updates)
  3. Delete and recreate (at the proper time, if displayed incorrectly) all meetings that occur in the date ranges listed here:
    • March 11 to April 1, 2007
    • the last Sunday of Oct. and the first Sunday of Nov. for 2007 and future years
    • the second Sunday of Mar. and the first Sunday of Apr. for 2008 and future years
You use a device that runs Palm OS and use SyncML
  1. Check that the times on meetings from 8:00 p.m. March 7 to 2:00 a.m. March 11 appear correctly in a web or desktop client
  2. Correct the meeting times in a UMCal client (not your device) if necessary
  3. Add the actual meeting times to the meeting titles
  4. Sync your device
  5. Refer to the meeting time in the title block for these five days
  6. Be sure to include the meeting time in the title for any new meetings you create during this range

A bug is currently open with the vendor regarding this issue. Until this bug is resolved, note that similarly affected ranges exist before each change in daylight saving time.

You use a device that runs Windows Mobile or PocketPC
  1. Check that the times on meetings in the following ranges appear correctly:
    • March 11 to April 1, 2007
    • the last Sunday of Oct. and the first Sunday of Nov. for 2007 and future years
    • the second Sunday of Mar. and the first Sunday of Apr. for 2008 and future years
  2. Correct the meeting times in a UMCal client (not your device) if necessary
  3. Add the actual meeting times to the meeting titles
  4. Sync your device
  5. Refer to the meeting time in the title block for these five days
  6. Be sure to include the meeting time in the title for any new meetings you create during theses range
As vendor-supplied updates for these devices become available, information will be posted here.

More information will be provided through this page, as it becomes available. The UMCal-L mailing list will also be used for updates.
