The Future of Northrop
Dear Patrons,
The transformation of Northrop continues! New windows, doors, roofs, entry canopies, refurbished lanterns and tuck pointing have restored Northrop's historic exterior to its original luster.
Phase II of the project focuses on transforming Northrop into a bustling, dynamic, 21st century cultural and academic center of distinction that is a place of discovery that nourishes, inspires, challenges, and stirs imagination and the human spirit. Northrop will feature the finest in artistic performance and creative expression and serve as a forum for deliberation and debate over the most innovative and challenging ideas of our time.
The University Honors Program and the Institute for Advanced Study will also become part of Northrop, further situating Northrop at the center of student and faculty life on campus as well as at the crossroad of pioneering scholarship, creativity, and learning.
Northrop's programs will grow over the next few years. Steven Rosenstone, Vice President for Scholarly and Cultural Affairs, will be working in partnership with students and faculty, deans and chancellors, centers and institutes, museums and galleries, as well as with cultural and civic organizations across the state to create new, exhilarating, and deeply engaging cultural, scholarly, and civic programs that will nourish both the soul and the brain.
To achieve this bold vision, Northrop's interior will be reconfigured. The auditorium will be rebuilt to dramatically improve acoustics and sight lines, to provide more comfortable seating with ample leg room, to integrate state-of-the-art technologies, and to create a more intimate experience for all. Beyond the auditorium, there will be welcoming, public spaces where students, faculty, and the people of Minnesota can gather for discussion or refreshments during the day as well as before and after Northrop events. We will have new (and additional) restrooms and elevators, better access to parking, and easier wayfinding.
Current plans call for renovations to begin in summer 2009. During construction we will continue to bring internationally acclaimed artists to campus and to the community. We will not miss a beat and look forward to Northrop's grand re-opening in fall 2011.
We will continue to share the excitement with you as the plans for Northrop evolve. We know you will want to be a part of Northrop's thrilling revitalization!
Please share with us your ideas and suggestions by contacting us at northrop@umn.edu or 612 625-6600.
Kind regards,
Sally V. Dischinger, Operations Manager
