In the picture to the right, is my new neighbor Brett Arenz, on right, from the U's plant pathology department, who previously worked for the DNR doing buckthorn eradication. He and his wife, Kate McGough live next door to Paul and I on Burton. His chainsaw-toting accomplice, Mike Bougie, also a new neighbor with his wife Susan on 2267 Folwell, has "logged" many hours removing Buckthorn from his in-laws' seven acres on the St. Croix River.
We uncovered an entire tree being strangled by a Virginia Creeper. Ben Zimmerman, Paul Crowell, and I were on burdock removal. I just love the sound of that taproot snapping... There were so many neighbors of all ages who pitched in: Quinn Waller, Niels and Caprice’s son, uncovered more hostas and other plantings by the playground. Besides pitching in to help, the food and visiting was first rate. It looked like the kids had a lot of fun, too.
Thanks so much for your work, time, and enthusiasm. Another huge pile of buckthorn bites the dust.

Dr. Phil Raup and his family, lived in the Grove in the house they built at 1572 Fulham from 1954-2009. He passed away on July 21 after a brief illness at the age of 97. He was surrounded by family at Sunrise of Roseville, his home for the past two and one-half years. His wife, Marian, passed away in June 2009. Phil's obituary was published in the Minneapolis Star and Tribune and the St. Paul Pioneer Press on July 24 and 25.
He is pictured at right while attending the 2011 Grove Spring Picnic and Park Clean Up on June 5.
Interment is on Monday, August 1 at 9:00 a.m. at the Lakewood Cemetery, 3600 Hennepin Avenue So., Minneapolis, (612) 822-2171.
The family invites neighbors to write in a guest book created, Dr. Philip M. Raup Guest Book, and join them to celebrate his long and illustrious career at the memorial celebrations.
Due to the state shutdown, the Grove Home Tour was canceled by the MN Historical Society. The tour coordinator, Aleah Vinick, said she would be interested in organizing the tour next year. A huge thanks to Terri Cermak,1580 Fulham, who served as the Grove volunteer tour organizer. A special thanks to the homeowners listed below who offered to open their homes for this event. If other homeowners would be interested in having their home on tour next year, please contact ugrove@umn.edu.

Regarding the rate of progress for this project, as it is a volunteer effort, it will progress by fits and starts. And like any other construction effort, there is more involved with this project and it will take longer to complete than we think.
The small group of volunteers have put in many hours of planning, discussion, and very hard work. Their hearts and a bit of soul are in the project, and I'm very grateful to them for the work they've done and are committed to completing in the years to come.
This mockup is not an actual representation of species, but all plant and design choices will be based on easy maintenance (i.e., site appropriate-ness), aesthetics, ease of use, and traffic sight lines. The triangle is 575 sq. ft. and large enough for a pathway. |
From how the triangle looks right now, with the project just beginning, I have great expectations for it.
If you’re interested in donating plants, funds, or “sweat equity," or have any questions about the triangle planting project, please contact me or the project manager, Rebecca Montgomery.
Thank you.
