Reinstalling the Operating System:

Flat fee of $89

UCS can upgrade, install, reinstall and configure your current OS for a flat fee of $89 (the flat fee is less when purchased with a Security Package). Reinstalling the OS eliminates additional baggage that slows down your computer (old programs, patch files, history files, temporary files, etc.). After an OS install, many users report computer performance improvements such as their programs and web pages load faster. This price does not include the cost of the operating system software, just the installation. This service includes:

  • Formatting hard disk
  • Installing OS
  • Installing all appropriate drivers for all devices
  • Testing computer OS.

You must provide the CD/Product Key info:

  • If you are a University of Minnesota faculty or staff, and your computer meets with the criteria below, you do not have to provide UCS with the Operating System CD and product key. The University of Minnesota Board of Regents approved an agreement between the University of Minnesota and Microsoft Corporation to provide Windows Operating System upgrade (e.g. Windows XP Pro upgrade) to all U of M computers that meet the following criteria.     • The computer must be OWNED BY THE U OF M.

    • There must be a Windows OS installed on the computer.

  • If your computer is NOT owned by the University of Minnesota, whenever UCS is troubleshooting, installing, or upgrading a computer Operating System (OS), you must provide UCS with a legal OS CD and its unique product key (usually located on the OS CD case or booklet). If you cannot find your OS CD, you can purchase a new OS at UCS, on-line at UMart, or at any computer store.

Would you like UCS consultants attempt to back-up your data?

UCS consultants may be able to back-up your data from your hard drive, save it on a server, and transfer your data back to your computer after OS install, reinstall, or upgrade is complete. This service is available at the hourly charge. It is very important that you be as specific as possible about what data needs to be backed up. (E.g. all data in your "My Docs" folder, email folder, specific file names, file extensions - .doc).


After an operating system reinstall, you will need to reinstall your software programs and external device drivers
. UCS can return retrieved data back to your computer after an OS reinstall, however, software programs need to be reinstalled. Often, the software is associated with your computer problem, so fresh installs of the software is necessary.

  • For an hourly fee, UCS consultants can install your software (e.g. Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, digital camera software, Email clients, Internet Browsers). Please provide the front desk with your software CDs and product keys.

  • For an hourly fee, UCS consultants can also install your external device drivers (e.g. HP Printer drivers, scanners). Please provide the front desk with the CD that came with the device, or at very least, the specific Mfr./model of the device (e.g. HP LaserJet 4100, Olympus 7150 digital camera).
