Recycling and Resale of Used Computer Equipment

Please contact Asset Recovery Corp at (651) 602-0789 to schedule a departmental computer equipment pickup.

When scheduling your appointment, you will be asked to provide inventory numbers of the items you would like picked up by ARC of the following:

  • desktops
  • laptops
  • servers
  • printers/copiers/multifunctional units

A U of M contact must meet the ARC driver on the scheduled date/time. The ARC driver will supply the contact with labels to apply on the inventoried items.

Asset Recovery Corp has been in the electronics recycling business for over 20 years, and they currently hold a contract for recycling electronics with the State of Minnesota. They have had no violations of hazardous waste regulations, and they meet the highest standards of environmental protection.

U of M departments are still responsible for sanitizing all computer items that may contain data (e.g. hard drives, thumb drives) before the vendor picks them up for recycling. (See OIT Security’s policy for deleting sensitive data.)

Where there is a need to physically destroy a hard drive, the department can request this service. Asset Recovery Corp will bring a drive stomper when they pick up the equipment, and the department can watch the drive being physically destroyed. There is an additional fee for this physical destruction service, which the department will be responsible for paying.

After you schedule a pickup with ARC, OIT will be billed for the cost of pick up, data wiping, and recycling.

When disposing of computer equipment that is considered a capital asset, it is the responsibility of U of M Department to fill out a Property Disposal form (UM 1393) and route to Inventory Services. Inventory Services will remove the computer items from the Department's capital equipment records. Remove all U of M asset management tags on the equipment. Contact Inventory Services at (612) 626-8222 if you have questions.

The U of M Office of Information Technology (OIT) had decided to outsource the recycling and resale of used computer equipment to a third party vendor. After conducting an RFP in conjunction with Purchasing Services, OIT had selected Asset Recovery Corp., who began collecting used computer equipment from University departments (including coordinate campuses and extension offices) on March 27, 2008.

To schedule a departmental computer pickup, contact Asset Recovery Corp. directly at (651) 602-0789, or visit their Web site: www.assetrecoverycorp.com
