In 1991, when the Internet was a jumble of incompatible networks and closed systems, a team of University programmers created Gopher—the Internet's first widely used search-and-retrieval system. After a study of the online fantasy game EQ2, Jaideep Srivastava, a professor of computer science and engineering, and his social scientist colleagues concluded that such massively multiplayer online (MMO) games represent a microcosm of human society. But unlike real society, MMOs can reveal much greater detail about human social behavior.
