It’s not enough for the University to dispense knowledge and do research, it has always felt a duty and a desire to be an integral part of the community and the world. Its students, faculty, and staff learn from others as they help businesses come into being, build bridges between cultures, tackle environmental challenges, and guide Minnesota families toward healthier lives.
The Office for Public Engagement works to enhance the University of Minnesota’s activities and stature as a publicly engaged research university.
The new Urban Research and Outreach/Engagement Center (UROC) anchors the University's presence in the North Minneapolis community, and supports projects and interdisciplinary teams that are focused on developing sustainable urban partnerships. A 21,000 square foot building is being renovated for UROC, and is anticipated to open in the summer of 2009.
UROC coordinates the University’s involvement in University Northside Partnership, an alliance formed in 2006. Through this partnership, the University collaborates with neighborhood organizations and local government to enhance the social and economic environment in North Minneapolis.
