The Rumors!
With a new year, and a new beginning, the January buzz claims that change is on the way! Rumor has it, Academic and Distributed Computing Services (ADCS), a branch of the Office of Information Technology (OIT), is being further spread out across the Twin Cities campuses. Already scattered across the West Bank, East Bank, and St. Paul, OIT officials have decided to further 1-HELP regional presence by dividing all ADCS staff into two-person teams and moving them to remote worksites spanning the entire metropolitan area! Does this sound a little odd? We'll let you know what we found out in a minute.
The second item of interest is that OIT is implementing new password policy at the U. Apparently, conventional password safety education has failed, and OIT has decided to simply delete e-mail accounts using passwords over one year old! Do you remember when you last changed your password? Read on to learn what they have to say about this new approach.
The Answers!
With regards to the gossip about ADCS being even further dispersed, this is false. In fact, OIT officials are in the process of acquiring new office space that will allow ADCS to work more closely, and more efficiently, than ever before. Out will be the multiple, dispersed cubicle farms, and in will be a new open workspace that facilitates communication and encourages collaboration.
About that new little password policy—well, you DO need to change your passwords, but no one will be deleting your e-mail account. If you haven't changed your password in more than a year, you'll simply be asked to choose a new password when you log on. However, if it has been more than one year and one month, you will then have to call the 1-HELP helpline in order to regain access to you account.
