THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA:
ADVANCING THE PUBLIC GOOD

Securing the University's Leadership Position
In the 21st Century

Draft to the Board of Regents

January 2005

Dear University Community Member,

Over the past several months, we have asked you to help us to shape a bold, coherent vision of the University of Minnesota of the future—a vision that will secure the university's leadership position in the 21st century. This draft document is the result of the contributions of hundreds of faculty, staff, students, regents, alumni, and other friends who care deeply about our university and its future.

We started this conversation to ensure the university's robust future in the midst of unprecedented change, not only in higher education, but in the broader state, national and international landscape. These profound changes are documented in this report, and they point to one simple but powerful conclusion: we must be bold and innovative if we want to position the University of Minnesota as one of the great public research universities in the world. To cling to the past or even linger in the present would impair seriously our ability to continue to serve the state of Minnesota, our nation, and the world with distinction in research, teaching, and outreach. Together, we must act to transform the University of Minnesota to meet the challenges, responsibilities, and most important the opportunities of 21st century institutions of higher education. To accomplish this we must aim high, act with resolve, and never waver in our quest to be one of the preeminent research universities in the world.

I urge you to read and respond to this document with care and thought. The report will be reviewed by the board of regents at its February 10-11, 2005 meeting. Your advice and counsel always are appreciated. I encourage you to communicate directly with me by e-mail at provost@umn.edu. Thank you.
