Editor's note: The U's Solar Vehicle Project team placed fifth out of 24 teams (only 15 crossed the finish line) in the 2008 North American Solar Challenge, a 10-day, 2,400-mile race from Plano, Texas, to Calgary, Alberta, which ended July 22. Centauras, the team car, won three of the five awards before the race, including best-prepared, fastest figure-8 on the track, and fastest lap on the track.

Lions caught in the crossfire A study by University lion researcher Craig Packer and colleagues points to climate change as the agent that set African lions up for fatal infections. More such events can be expected as global warming continues. McClaurin helps U forge new partnerships The U hired Irma McClaurin to develop and run its first Urban Research and Outreach/Engagement Center. An associate vice president, she brings commitment, enthusiasm, and expertise to the project. A life of leisure University of Minnesota researchers are finding that giving livestock animals a more comfortable living situation may be worth the added costs. Ambition without borders University of Minnesota senior Anh Tran, who founded the first-ever chapter of Biology Without Borders, has recently earned a 2008 Howard R. Swearer Student Humanitarian Award from Campus Compact. A gathering place for great minds The U's William I. Fine Theoretical Physics Institute has had a distinctly cosmopolitan flavor since it opened more than 20 years ago. Its leading researchers come from Russia, and they study mathematical models and abstractions of physics that lay the groundwork for advances in a large number of technologies that affect our lives. Beyond slapping: fend off the mozzies Summer is here and so are the mozzies! University of Minnesota entomologist Jeff Hahn has some tips to lessen mosquito annoyance around your home.

'60s reunion for Duluth alumni Were you studying at UMD between 1960 and 1969? If you were, it's time to rekindle those memories and meet your old buddies. The "Decade of the '60s Reunion" will be held July 31 through August 3 on the Duluth campus. Activities include dancing with a rock 'n' roll band and a campus tour. Midlife happiness Best-selling author Richard Leider will moderate a free, online discussion of his new book, Something to Live For: Finding Your Way in the Second Half of Life, July 31 to August 21. The discussion is part of the College of Continuing Education's LearningLife "Beyond the Book" program. Leider will post thoughts and insights on a weekly basis and invite reader participation as well. For more information, see LearningLife. To cap the online program, a dinner and live discussion with Leider will be held on Thursday, September 4, at 6 p.m. in the Campus Club on the Twin Cities campus in Minneapolis. Tickets are $40; call 612-624-4000 to reserve. Olympic opening ceremony The soon-to-open Confucius Institute on the Twin Cities campus will host a public viewing of the 2008 Beijing Olympics opening ceremony on Friday, August 8, from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at Coffman Union Theater in Minneapolis. A brief educational program will precede the broadcast; you'll learn the official Chinese Olympic cheer, the significance of 8-8-08, and other Olympic and China-related trivia. Admission is free. The Confucius Institute, scheduled to open this fall, is a new initiative by the U's China Center. It will provide training programs for teachers of K-12 Chinese language classes and offer Chinese language and culture lessons to Minnesota residents. Help yourself to health The U's Farmers Market is back for a fourth season along Church Street on the Twin Cities campus in Minneapolis. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesdays through October 8, more than a dozen vendors will sell locally grown flowers, fruits, and vegetables. The season's theme of "What's not to like about green?" emphasizes the benefits of eating local. To learn more about the market, read "Help yourself to health. Save yourself some green".
