History, Tradition, and Pageantry
The sounds of the marching band, the Rouser, homecoming, trophy
games, maroon and gold, and Ski-U-Mah. The long history of Golden
Gopher football pageantry and tradition is at the heart of the football
experience. These things bring students, alumni and fans together
and create fond memories that last a lifetime.

National Championships
After winning the first-ever Big Nine team title in 1900 and outscoring opponents by an incredible 618-12 margin in 1903, the University of Minnesota football team finally won its first of six national championship in 1934. |

Tradition and Pageantry
The Gopher mascot is a tradition as old as the state. Minnesota was tabbed the “Gopher State” in 1857 after a satirizing cartoon, depicting nine Gophers with the heads of local politicians pulling a locomotive, was published. |

Trophy Games
Trophy games—annual games between school rivals—are a rich Big Ten tradition. The Golden Gopher football team battles in four trophy games each year.
