Environmental Review Process

To remain on schedule for a 2009 stadium opening, at its December 2004 meeting, the Board of Regents asked the administration to begin the necessary environmental reviews of the stadium project and to do so in a manner that is consistent with the board's commitment to an open and public process. The board also approved a $1.5 million capital budget amendment to cover the immediate costs of the environmental work and project planning costs.

An environmental review is a public process for examining potential significant impacts of major development projects. Conducting an environmental review is the norm for projects of this scope.

The review will examine the impact that the development of the proposed stadium facility would have on the environment and will include consideration of traffic, air quality, vibration, etc. It will also identify any needed environmental remediation for the site. The review is expected to take about a year to complete and is intended to give the University information it needs in making final decisions about proceeding with the project. It is the next step in the stadium development process but does not obligate the University to do the project.
